HVAC Design

Residential
HVAC Design

Apartment schemes and housing developments face tightening energy and ventilation regulations. Chillmasters provides the engineering design — MVHR, heat networks, heat pumps and SAP modelling — to help architects and developers meet Part L 2021 and the Future Homes Standard with confidence.

Compliant HVAC Design
for Residential Projects

Residential HVAC design is increasingly driven by regulation. Part L 2021 raised the bar on fabric and systems efficiency; the Future Homes Standard will push further still. We work alongside architects and M&E coordinators from early design stage to ensure the chosen ventilation and heating strategy improves SAP scores, satisfies planning conditions and is practically installable.

  • Part L 2021 and Future Homes Standard compliance review and design guidance
  • SAP calculations demonstrating performance improvements from MVHR and heat pump integration
  • MVHR system design to Part F 2021 flow rates with commissioning checklists and balancing records
  • Communal heat network design including energy centres, heat interface units (HIUs) and primary distribution pipework
  • Air-to-air heat pump specification for upper-floor overheating risk management
  • Coordination with architects, structural engineers and M&E contractors throughout RIBA stages
  • As-built ventilation commissioning records and O&M manuals for building control sign-off

Designing for Regulatory Compliance

Part L Compliance

Part L 2021 requires significant reductions in carbon emissions compared with previous editions. We review fabric U-values, thermal bridging, air permeability targets and services efficiency to ensure the proposed HVAC strategy supports a compliant SAP calculation from the outset.

SAP Performance

MVHR heat recovery and air-source heat pumps can substantially improve a dwelling's SAP score. We model the as-designed system against the notional building to demonstrate compliance margins and identify where design changes deliver the best energy performance gains.

MVHR Design

Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery must deliver the correct Part F 2021 flow rates to every habitable room and wet room. We size ductwork, specify units with appropriate heat recovery efficiency, and produce the commissioning checklist and balancing records required for building control approval.

Heat Network Design

For larger residential schemes, communal heat networks fed by centralised heat pumps or combined heat and power plant can be more efficient than individual dwelling plant. We design the energy centre, primary pipework distribution and HIUs so residents receive reliable hot water and space heating at the right temperatures and pressures.
